Why Pouring Hot Water Down Drains Can Sometimes Backfire

Many people pour hot or boiling water down the sink because they believe it dissolves grease, removes odors, and prevents blockages. Warm water can help rinse away soap residue and small amounts of fresh grease, but boiling water is not always safe or effective.

The main concern is the plumbing material. Metal pipes generally tolerate high temperatures, but many modern homes use PVC or other plastic drainpipes. Repeated exposure to boiling water may soften the plastic, weaken glued joints, or damage seals—especially if the water sits inside a blocked pipe instead of flowing away immediately.

Hot water can also temporarily melt grease without truly removing it. The liquid grease may travel farther down the pipe, cool again, and harden in a more difficult-to-reach location. That can turn a small buildup near the sink into a deeper blockage.

For routine cleaning, use hot tap water rather than freshly boiled water. Never pour cooking oil or fat into the drain; allow it to cool and place it in the rubbish instead. A sink strainer can also catch food scraps before they enter the plumbing.

If the drain is already slow or completely blocked, avoid repeatedly adding boiling water or mixing chemical cleaners. A plunger, drain snake, or professional plumber is usually safer.

So, while warm water can help with ordinary rinsing, boiling water is not a universal drain-cleaning trick—and in some plumbing systems, it may cause more harm than good.
