The Mark on My Shoulder Revealed Who I Really Was
The man who caught me before I fell was the estate owner himself. He stared at the small crescent-shaped birthmark near my shoulder and asked where I had gotten it. Confused, I explained that I had been born with it.
His face lost all colour.
He immediately called for an old photograph from his study. In it, a young woman stood beside him holding a baby whose shoulder carried the exact same mark. The woman was his sister, who had disappeared more than twenty years earlier after leaving home with a man the family disliked.
That baby was me.
My mother had raised me without mentioning her wealthy relatives. After she died, I believed we had no surviving family. The estate owner revealed that they had searched for us for years but never discovered that my mother had changed our surname.
His daughter—the woman who had treated me so cruelly—laughed at first and called the resemblance a coincidence. Then a DNA test confirmed the truth: the maid she had humiliated was her cousin and a legal beneficiary of the family trust.
I did not suddenly become interested in their fortune. I only wanted help paying for my mother’s treatment and the dignity of being treated like a human being.
The owner covered her medical expenses and offered me a proper position managing the estate. His daughter was ordered to apologise.
I had entered that house believing I was invisible. One small mark revealed that I had belonged there all along.
