The Photo Revealed Nathan’s Real Exit Plan
“I know exactly how it looks,” I said. “It looks like someone finally recognised the value of my work.”
Claire’s anger faltered.
Mark had offered me a paid consulting contract maintaining equipment for several local businesses. The first agreement alone was worth more than her parents would have paid a professional for years of repairs.
But lunch had involved something else too.
I had shown Mark photographs of company tools Claire’s father had repeatedly asked me to repair at his house. Some still carried inventory numbers from Claire’s workplace. Mark recognised them immediately.
Her father had been taking damaged equipment home, claiming it had been discarded, then expecting me to restore it so he could sell it privately.
Claire knew.
That was why she had panicked when she saw the photograph.
Mark opened an internal investigation. Security records, resale listings, and messages showed that Claire had helped remove several items and had used my unpaid labour to increase their value.
She accused me of betraying the family.
“You laughed when your father said I could be replaced,” I replied. “You simply never expected me to stop protecting you.”
Her father was required to return the equipment and repay the company. Claire lost her position after the investigation confirmed her involvement.
I accepted Mark’s consulting offer and moved into my own apartment weeks later.
For five years, they treated my skills as free because they believed I had nowhere better to use them.
The moment I did, everything they had built on my silence began falling apart.
