When I opened the front door, the cake slipped from my hands and landed upside down on the floor. My girlfriend was standing in the living room with three people I had never met. Boxes covered the carpet, clothes hung inside my new wardrobe, and someone was measuring the windows for curtains.
She smiled nervously and said she wanted to surprise me by “making the place feel like ours.”
We had been dating for only three months.
Then one of the strangers introduced herself as my girlfriend’s mother and asked which bedroom she would be using. Apparently, my girlfriend had told her family that we were moving in together and that her mother could stay until she found another flat. She had copied the spare key while I was showering at her place and brought everyone inside before I arrived.
I asked them to leave immediately. My girlfriend became furious, claiming that a house this large was wasted on one person. She said that because we were serious, I should be happy to support her family.
That sentence ended the relationship.
I changed the locks that evening and contacted the security company the next morning. Later, I discovered she had already changed her mailing address to my house and ordered furniture using my address without permission.
I had spent years saving for a peaceful home. Within hours, someone I barely knew had treated it like family property. The destroyed cake was disappointing, but it also stopped me from making a far more expensive mistake.
