Antique Bed Warmers Kept Families Cozy Before Modern Home Heating Arrived Everywhere
Long before central heating and electric blankets became household staples, families relied on simple tools to stay warm during cold winter nights. One of the most practical was the antique bed warmer, a clever device designed to warm bedding before bedtime and make chilly bedrooms much more comfortable.
A traditional bed warmer featured a round copper or brass pan attached to a long wooden handle. The metal pan was heated—typically by placing hot coals inside—then carefully passed between the bed sheets to warm the linens before sleeping. The wooden handle protected the user’s hands from the heat, while decorative vents in the lid allowed airflow and showcased the craftsmanship of the era.
