The Real Sale Left Nathan With Nothing

Gordon removed two purchase agreements from the folder. The first was Nathan’s $780,000 contract, signed as though he had authority to transfer property he did not own. The second was mine. Three days before our daughter was born, after Susan confirmed what Nathan was attempting, I had accepted an independently appraised offer for $2.7 million from Gordon’s clients. The transaction had been completed properly through the title company, with every signature and ownership document verified.

Nathan went completely still. My agreement included a temporary occupancy period giving me time to recover from childbirth and relocate comfortably. The proceeds had gone directly into an account Nathan could not access. Gordon explained that his clients had also received Nathan’s competing paperwork during the title review and wanted answers about representations he had made concerning ownership and authority.

Loretta immediately insisted Nathan had simply misunderstood our marital rights. Susan corrected her calmly. Marriage had never given Nathan permission to sell inherited property in his own name, and nobody at that table was going to decide whether his documents created legal consequences except the professionals reviewing them. Nathan looked at the $150 beside our daughter’s blanket and finally understood how absurd his plan had been.

I moved six weeks later into a smaller home near my sister, with enough money safely invested to give my daughter stability for years. Nathan and I separated, and every financial question went through attorneys from that point forward. He had believed selling my home cheaply would leave me desperate enough to accept whatever he offered. Instead, the only sale that mattered was the one I had authorized myself. I kept the $150, too. Not because I needed it, but because someday it would remind me how little Nathan thought it would cost to remove his wife and newborn daughter from a $2.7 million life.
