The Bill Finally Revealed Who Owned Larks

I looked at the check, then at Tomás. “Take it off the house account,” I said. Garrett smiled triumphantly—until I added, “Except the house account is closed for this party.” The room went completely silent. Tomás nodded and placed the folder in front of Garrett. “Ms. Delphine Hale is the sole owner of Larks,” he explained. “She had originally planned to cover tonight as an engagement gift. She has withdrawn that gift.”

Coralie stared at me. Vivienne actually whispered, “Owner?” I reminded my sister about the message I had sent three years earlier when I purchased Gus’s remaining shares. She remembered it now. Of course she did. Garrett looked at the $5,200 total and protested that he had announced dinner was on him only because everyone assumed I was handling the restaurant discount.
...

That was when Tomás brought over another folder—the wedding inquiry. Vivienne’s assistant had requested the private dining room, catering, premium wine package, and an “employee family rate.” I told them Larks would be happy to host the wedding at the standard price, with the usual deposit and contract. No discount. No favors. And definitely no sister quietly absorbing the bill.

Garrett eventually paid for the engagement dinner with two cards. Coralie followed me into the hallway afterward and accused me of humiliating her. I asked whether pouring wine after her fiancé snapped his fingers at me had been less humiliating. She had no answer. I still loved my sister, but I stopped confusing love with unlimited access to everything I had built. Seventeen years earlier, Gus handed me a corkscrew and told me anything I broke, I would learn to open. That night, I finally opened the one thing I had kept locked longest: my mouth.
