The Audit Finished What Derek Had Started

What happened inside Courtroom 7A was only the beginning. The judge did not simply hand me everything Derek owned that afternoon. Instead, the financial disclosures were referred for further investigation, disputed assets were temporarily restricted, and the divorce proceedings were continued while forensic accountants traced the accounts Walter had uncovered. Derek’s confident prediction that I would leave with nothing disappeared almost immediately.

Over the following months, investigators compared his sworn disclosures with bank records, corporate ledgers, and transfers connected to Brianna. Several luxury purchases he had described as ordinary business expenses were examined, including the bracelet she had proudly worn to court. Brianna quickly hired her own attorney and began distancing herself from Derek’s financial decisions. The relationship that had once seemed so glamorous did not survive very long once subpoenas replaced expensive dinners.

My divorce settlement eventually reflected the marital assets Derek had attempted to conceal, while separate allegations involving company money were handled in their own proceedings. Walter reminded me repeatedly that we had won because I had followed his simplest instruction: document everything and never warn Derek about what we knew. For nearly a year, I had quietly copied statements, preserved emails, and kept records every time numbers disappeared.

The condo was eventually sold, and I moved somewhere smaller that belonged entirely to my new life. I kept my used car, too. Derek had mentioned it in the courthouse hallway as though it proved I was insignificant. I came to love that car. Every morning when I started it, I remembered the woman he had mocked as a quiet, middle-aged accountant. He had been right about one thing: I was quiet. He simply never understood that accountants know exactly where to look when the numbers stop making sense.
