The officers photographed everything before allowing me to continue. My grandmother’s handwritten will was dated six months after the version my family had presented in probate. Attached to it was a notarized statement explaining that she feared someone would pressure her into changing her estate plan and that, if the original disappeared, this sealed copy should be delivered directly to the court.
Beneath the document lay a leather folder filled with property records, bank statements, and decades of correspondence. Together, they showed that the family trust had been funded largely with money from properties my grandmother had purchased herself—not with the inheritance my father always claimed had come through his side of the family. She had carefully documented every transaction, anticipating that one day someone might question the truth.
The final compartment held dozens of letters addressed to me, one for each major milestone in life. On top rested a short note.
