The Secret Daniel Had Been Carrying Alone

Gerald led me into an empty consultation room and closed the door. Then he told me Daniel had been diagnosed nearly four months earlier with an aggressive form of cancer. The overnight stays I thought were extra shifts had often been treatments, scans, and appointments squeezed between surgeries. Daniel had made everyone promise not to tell me because he wanted our daughter to finish the school year without watching her father become a patient.
...

I could barely breathe. Then Gerald explained the part that hurt even more. Daniel had been volunteering for extra cases because he was quietly preparing to take an extended medical leave. He had spent months organizing his patients, training another surgeon to cover them, updating our insurance, and putting our finances in order. The night I found him crying beside our bed had been the evening doctors told him his treatment was not working as well as they had hoped.

Gerald took me downstairs to a private treatment room. Daniel was sitting there in hospital clothes with an IV beside him, looking smaller than the man who had left our house that morning. When he saw the lunch bag in my hand, his face collapsed. He apologized before I could say anything. I wasn’t angry that he was sick. I was angry that he had decided loving us meant suffering alone.

I sat beside him, opened the lunch I had packed, and placed my note on his lap. “You don’t have to take care of everyone. Let me have a turn.” Daniel read it twice and started crying. That afternoon, for the first time in months, he stopped pretending everything was fine. We didn’t know what the next year would bring. But from that day forward, he never went to another appointment alone, and I never again wrapped up his dinner without knowing exactly where my husband was.
