The House Was Sitting on Land I Owned

I looked at Mom and asked what exactly she meant by “settle down.” She gestured toward Delphine’s photograph and started talking about mortgages, property, and building something permanent. I let her finish. Then I asked Delphine for the address of her new house. She laughed and told me, assuming I was finally showing interest. I already knew the address.

Three years earlier, one of my investment companies had purchased the undeveloped land beneath that entire subdivision through a long-term ground-lease structure. Delphine and Rowan owned the house itself, but the land beneath it belonged to a company I controlled. Their closing documents included the lease disclosures. They simply had never noticed the ownership name buried in the paperwork.
...

Rowan stopped smiling first. He pulled up the documents on his phone and stared at the screen. My mother asked whether I was serious. I explained that there was nothing sinister about it. Thousands of homeowners lived under similar arrangements, their terms were fixed, and I had no intention of interfering with Delphine’s home. The only thing that had changed was my family’s understanding of who had supposedly failed to “build a real life.”

Nobody knew what to say after that. Delphine finally asked why I had never told anyone how successful I had become. I reminded her that for years, every time I mentioned work, the family called it mysterious, reckless, or temporary. Eventually, I stopped offering explanations to people who had already decided not to listen. I raised my glass toward her and Rowan and congratulated them genuinely. Then I looked at Mom. “I grew up a long time ago,” I said. “You were just too busy comparing me to notice.”
