The Records Proved He Knew Everything

Three days after Grayson received the divorce papers, Priya called me with something I had overlooked. Buried inside the hospital audit trail was a record of every employee who had accessed my medical chart. Grayson’s credentials appeared repeatedly. He had opened my file nineteen times during those thirty days, including the night surgeons documented that my infection had become life-threatening. He knew exactly how sick I was. Worse, he had no clinical role in my treatment, which meant there was no legitimate reason for him to be reviewing my records.
...

As a quality auditor, I knew what that meant. I submitted the access logs to the hospital’s privacy office and removed myself completely from the investigation. Within days, compliance officers began reviewing his activity. They discovered Grayson had accessed my chart from his office, the transplant unit, and even from a computer near the conference center on the same evening he attended the gala. He had been following my condition while deliberately staying away.

Then another record surfaced. On the day my condition worsened, a nurse had documented an attempt to contact my husband. Minutes later, someone using Grayson’s hospital credentials entered a note stating that he was “aware of the patient’s condition.” He had known I might die, yet never walked five floors upstairs.

Grayson finally requested a meeting through Priya. I declined. The divorce proceeded, while the hospital placed him under formal review for inappropriate chart access and documentation practices. Months later, when the settlement was finalized, Priya asked whether I regretted leaving without confronting him. I told her no. Grayson had already given me his answer nineteen separate times. Every time he opened my chart and chose not to open my hospital-room door, he had made the same decision.
