The Check Became the Most Expensive Mistake He Made

The following morning, Aldric discovered that controlling the largest voting bloc did not mean I could simply throw him onto the sidewalk. What it did mean was that the emergency board meeting he had spent years avoiding could finally happen. I attended with Delphine beside me while independent directors reviewed contracts, related-party transactions, and several decisions Aldric had pushed through without meaningful oversight.
...

The $650,000 check became part of that meeting too. Delphine had photographed it before we left dinner, along with the annulment papers. Her father tried to describe the offer as a private family matter, but she interrupted him. She told the board exactly what he had said about our marriage and made something else perfectly clear: she had never asked him to interfere in her relationship or negotiate on her behalf.

By the end of the week, Aldric remained a shareholder, but he was removed as chief executive while the board conducted a broader financial review. He called me twice. The first time he threatened lawyers. The second time he asked whether we could “handle this privately.” I gave him the same answer both times: anything involving the company would now be handled through proper corporate channels.

Delphine and I went home to the same modest apartment that evening. Nothing about our marriage suddenly became luxurious, because that had never been the point. I eventually framed a photocopy of Aldric’s check and kept it inside my office drawer. Not as a trophy, but as a reminder. For three years, her family had measured my worth by the car I drove and the salary they thought I earned. In the end, the most valuable thing I possessed was something Aldric had never understood—Delphine had chosen me when she believed I had nothing to offer except myself.
