The Last Dance Was Meant for Her

My wife’s voice filled the ballroom with instructions for a woman she had never met. She told the bride that loving our son would sometimes require patience, stubbornness, and the ability to laugh when he insisted he was “fine” while clearly falling apart. Then her voice softened. She said she hoped whoever married him would never feel like she was replacing anyone, because love was not a chair with only one person allowed to sit in it.
...

My son lowered his head and began crying. His bride reached for him, but the tape wasn’t finished. My wife asked everyone except the newlyweds to step away from the dance floor. Then she said, “This one belongs to you two. I’ve already had my years with him. Now go make yours.” The DJ started the song she had chosen nine years earlier, and my son pulled his wife into his arms.

Across the room, my second wife stood rigid beside the memory table. She had spent the entire day trying to keep the past invisible, but now every person in the ballroom had heard exactly why it still mattered. Nobody confronted her. Nobody needed to. My first wife had managed, from nine years away, to make room for the bride without erasing herself.

After the dance, my daughter-in-law came straight toward me and wrapped both arms around my neck. She asked if she could keep the cassette someday. I told her there was still a Side B labeled “FOR HER.” We played it privately the next morning. It contained ten more minutes meant only for the woman my son would marry. By the end, she was crying again. So was I. My wife had never met her, but somehow she had still found a way to welcome her into the family.
