The Toast Put Wren Back Beside Her Father

I raised my glass and said, “Before we celebrate Desmond beginning a new chapter, I think we should remember the little girl who was already part of his story.” The room quieted. I spoke about Rosalind, about the daughter she had left behind, and about how hard Desmond and I had worked to make sure Wren never felt abandoned. Then I repeated exactly what I had heard Coralie tell her.
...

Desmond slowly lowered his glass. “You said that to Wren?” Coralie immediately tried to explain that she only wanted photographs of “the new family unit.” Desmond’s expression changed. “My daughter is not outside my family unit.” He crossed the room, knelt beside Wren, and asked why she had not told him. She whispered, “I thought you wanted her more now.” I watched the color disappear from his face.

Desmond called the photographer back before the reception ended. He asked for new family pictures with Wren standing beside him, then requested one photograph of just father and daughter. Coralie protested that I had deliberately embarrassed her, but Desmond finally said what Wren needed him to say: “You embarrassed yourself when you competed with a five-year-old.” He made it clear that marrying him never gave anyone permission to diminish Rosalind’s child.

The marriage did not magically become perfect that night. Desmond insisted on counseling and firm boundaries concerning Wren, and Coralie had to rebuild the trust she had damaged.

Later, Wren climbed into my lap and asked, “Grandpa, am I still Daddy’s girl?”

I kissed her forehead.

“You never stopped being one.”

The toast was never about ruining a wedding.

It was about making sure one little girl knew nobody could marry her out of her own family.
