My settlement had been far larger than Curtis claimed. After medical expenses were paid, $24,610 remained in an account intended for me. Records Mama had saved showed Curtis later moved that exact amount into an account he controlled. A cashier’s check issued days afterward had helped finance Wendell’s first trucking venture. I stared at my brother’s name on the copy and finally understood why he had told me not to “dig up old stuff.”

Mama’s letter explained the cash in the flour tin. She had discovered the transfer years too late to undo what happened easily, and guilt had followed her ever since.
