The Toast Put Juniper Back Where She Belonged

I raised my glass and looked first at Rowan. “Before we celebrate a new family beginning,” I said, “I want everyone to remember the little girl who already belonged to this family before today.” The room quieted immediately. I told them Juniper had lost her mother at two years old, but she had never lost her place beside her father. Then I repeated exactly what I had heard Delphine tell her about staying out of the photographs.
...

Rowan’s face changed instantly. He slowly lowered his glass and looked toward Juniper, who was sitting beside me instead of near the bridal table. “She said that to you?” he asked. Juniper nodded without speaking. Delphine started explaining that she had only wanted “a few pictures of the new couple,” but Rowan stopped her. “Then you ask for couple pictures. You don’t tell my five-year-old daughter she isn’t important anymore.”

The photographer was still there. Rowan walked across the room, lifted Juniper into his arms, and asked for the family photographs to be taken again. This time, Juniper stood directly beside him. He also asked for one photograph with Vivienne’s small framed picture included—not to erase his new marriage, but to make clear that his daughter’s mother would never become something everyone was expected to pretend had not existed.

Later, Rowan thanked me for speaking up and admitted he had missed signs he should have noticed earlier. He and Delphine had a difficult conversation that night, followed by counseling and firm boundaries about Juniper’s place in their home.

My toast was never meant to ruin their wedding.

It was meant to remind one frightened little girl that nobody gets married into a family by pushing her out of it.
