The Yellow Roses Exposed Desmond’s Lifelong Cruel Lie

The note told me to call a number and ask for Celeste. She answered on the first ring. “I’m Desmond’s daughter,” she said, and then apologized before explaining anything else. After her father died, she had discovered a locked metal box containing dozens of letters—some written by Theodore to me, others written by me to Theodore. None had ever been delivered. Desmond had kept them for more than fifty years.
...

Theodore had survived the explosion. He was badly wounded, evacuated through several military hospitals, and spent months recovering overseas. During that time, Desmond became the person carrying news between us. According to the letters, he eventually told Theodore that I had accepted his presumed death, moved away, and wanted no further contact. Worse, the box contained a forged letter supposedly from me saying I had met someone else and begging Theodore not to return. Theodore believed it.

Celeste had finally tracked Theodore down using information hidden among her father’s papers. He was alive, eighty years old, living quietly several states away. When she told him I had never remarried, Theodore apparently cried for nearly an hour. The yellow roses were his first attempt to reach me because he remembered the promise he had made two days after our wedding. The note included his telephone number and one request: “Please let me explain before you decide whether you ever want to see me.”

I stared at that number until sunset.

Then I called.

A man answered after three rings.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then a trembling voice said, “Rosalind?”

Fifty-six years disappeared inside a single word.

I had spent my entire adult life believing Theodore never came home.

The truth was worse.

He had spent his believing I didn’t want him to.
