The Eleventh Property Was Never The Real Surprise

Rosalind turned so quickly her chair scraped the floor. My mother actually whispered, “Eleven?” Judge Hearne ignored them and continued reviewing the exhibits my attorney had filed. The mountain house was only one property held through my investment company, purchased with documented funds years after I had stopped relying on anyone in my family. But the number of properties was not what mattered. The supposed agreement did.
...

My attorney stood and handed the judge the original closing records, signature samples, and a report from the document examiner we had retained. The signature on Rosalind’s agreement resembled mine, but the date created a larger problem. On the day I supposedly signed it, I had been attending a property conference hundreds of miles away. More importantly, the notary whose stamp appeared beneath my name had provided a sworn statement saying she had never notarized that document.

Roderick’s face changed first. Rosalind stopped smiling. Their lawyer requested time to review the new material, and Judge Hearne granted it rather than delivering some dramatic instant ruling. She also made clear that no transfer would occur while the authenticity of the agreement was disputed. My attorney had already referred the questionable document to the appropriate authorities for review. Suddenly, my parents were no longer applauding.

Outside the courtroom, Mom grabbed my sleeve. “Why didn’t you tell us you owned eleven properties?”

I looked at her hand until she released me.

“Because you never asked what I built. You only asked what Rosalind could have.”

Weeks later, their claim collapsed after the document could not be authenticated, and the mountain house remained mine.

They had entered court believing they were taking the last thing I owned.

Instead, they discovered they had never known what I owned at all.
