The Deed Ended His Sisters’ House Grab

That afternoon, I called the attorney who had handled our estate planning two years before Rourke became sick. By noon the next day, I was sitting across from her with the folder Coralie had left behind. Their lawyer was relying on an old copy of Rourke’s will, which divided part of his remaining estate among his sisters. But the house was different. Years earlier, Rourke and I had signed and recorded a deed structured so his interest passed to me when he died.
...

My attorney pulled the current property record and slid it across the desk. My name was right there. Rourke’s death did not suddenly make his sisters owners, and an old will could not simply override the recorded ownership arrangement. Their lawyer apparently had not yet seen the updated deed. We sent him copies along with a written notice that Coralie and her sisters had no authority to list, enter, inspect, or make decisions concerning my home.

Two days later, Coralie called. Her confidence was gone. She claimed Rourke had “promised” the family the property would eventually return to them. I told her that if she believed she had a legitimate legal claim, her attorney could communicate with mine. She tried guilt next, saying I was keeping their brother’s legacy from them. That hurt, but it did not change the paperwork—or fourteen years of marriage.

They never came back with another folder.

Weeks later, while cleaning Rourke’s desk, I found a note tucked beneath our old mortgage papers.

“Delphine,” he had written, “whatever happens, home stays yours.”

I sat on the floor and cried until sunset.

His sisters thought the house was the last thing Rourke had left me.

They were wrong.

The last thing he left me was certainty.
