Inside the gift bag was a sealed plastic sleeve containing the folded napkin Roland had used. Juliet had quietly picked it up after noticing him acting strangely when he sat down. Then she reached beneath the counter and pulled out her tablet. Weeks earlier, after someone repeatedly stole tips from the register, we had installed a security camera facing the dining area. Juliet had already saved the footage. On-screen, everyone could clearly see Roland unwrap something from the napkin, lean toward his plate, and place it directly into the icing while his girlfriend blocked the view.
The bakery went completely silent. Roland tried claiming the video was misleading, but Juliet did not argue. She simply saved another copy and told him the original would remain stored. I refunded his order, asked both of them to leave, and documented the incident. Later, I preserved the footage and contacted my attorney in case Roland tried making false complaints about the bakery afterward.
Before walking out, Roland looked at Juliet and said, “You’d embarrass your own father?”
She shook her head.
“You came here to embarrass Mom. I just made sure everyone saw who actually did it.”
The customers slowly returned to their food.
And for once, Roland left without controlling the story.
