The Ceremony Finally Showed Nadia Who Truly Belonged

After the applause faded, General Hale did not have my family arrested or create another spectacle. Ceremony staff simply checked the invitation records, confirmed that Sabine was using the guest pass issued for my family allocation, and moved them from the restricted VIP section. My father protested that he was my parent and deserved to remain. Hale answered calmly, “Then perhaps you should have come here today as her father instead of treating her graduation like someone else’s opportunity.”

After the ceremony, six senior officers waited to congratulate me. Dad stood several yards away watching people shake my hand, mention assignments I had earned, and praise work he had never bothered to ask about. Marguerite finally whispered, “Why didn’t you tell us you were first in your class?” I looked at her and said, “I stopped announcing achievements to people who never showed up for them.”

Sabine stared at the wet pavement. Dad tried to explain that he had only wanted the family to “look respectable.”

I glanced at my uniform.

“You left me outside because you thought I embarrassed you.”

Then I walked toward the officers waiting for me.

For years, Dad had insisted nobody would notice what I accomplished.

That morning, the only people who failed to see me were the ones who had chosen not to look.
