Sunday Lunch Finally Showed Nathan What Comfort Cost
Nathan stared at me while Rosalyn demanded an explanation. I calmly told them exactly what had changed. Half my paycheck was now supposedly reserved for Bridget, just as Nathan had requested, so every optional expense I had been covering had been removed. The cleaning service, landscaping, premium groceries, subscriptions, and elaborate Sunday meals were gone. Shared household bills would also be divided evenly from that month forward. Nathan’s father slowly turned toward him. “You promised your sister half of Camille’s income without asking her?” Nathan suddenly looked much less confident.
Rosalyn immediately said helping Bridget was important. I agreed. Then I asked how much she and Nathan’s father planned to contribute each month. The kitchen went silent. Nathan tried saying that wasn’t the point. “It is exactly the point,” I replied. “Everyone was generous when the money belonged to me.” I had never refused to help Bridget. I had refused to become the family’s automatic funding source while everyone else kept their own comforts untouched.
By Tuesday, Nathan admitted he could not afford half the household expenses plus the lifestyle he had grown accustomed to. We sat down and created a realistic budget together, including a smaller amount we could both agree to give Bridget temporarily.
Nathan had announced that the easy life was over.
He just hadn’t realized he was talking about his own.
