The Notice Revealed Who Really Owned the House
Wesley read the name printed above the notice twice: Hawthorne Residential Holdings LLC. The company had purchased the property from me eleven days earlier. The letter explained that ownership had transferred and that the occupants would need to leave according to the required notice and legal process. Delphine immediately demanded to know what had happened to “her equity.” I calmly reminded her that she had never been on the deed, never made a mortgage payment, and never purchased so much as one percentage of the property.
Then I placed another document beside her plate. My pension had been redirected to my private account. I had also stopped paying their phone plan, car insurance, streaming subscriptions, and the credit card Wesley repeatedly used for “emergencies.” For three years, they had treated my retirement income like part of their household budget. Starting that month, they would discover what their lifestyle actually cost without me subsidizing it.
Delphine stared at me. “You sold my childhood home?”
“No,” I replied. “I sold mine. You’re the one who told me I should leave.”
Wesley finally lowered the notice.
They had brought me to dinner believing they were deciding where I would spend the rest of my life.
I had already made that decision myself.
