The Envelope on the Table Wasn’t Revenge—It Was Everything Everett Had Been Hoping I Would Never Do

Inside was a letter from Marguerite’s firm notifying Everett that I had retained counsel and formally withdrawn any consent for our home to be pledged, refinanced, or used to support Bramwell. Attached was a demand that he preserve every company record, bank statement, email, and document connected to the proposed financing. Delphine’s attorney had sent a separate notice requiring a complete accounting of anything Everett had handled under the authority she thought was limited to ordinary estate paperwork.

Everett stared at me. “You’re treating me like a criminal.”

“No,” I said. “I’m treating this like something serious.”

...

That distinction mattered. Nobody at the table could declare fraud simply because Everett had hidden documents beneath a recliner. The lender, Delphine’s bank, and the attorneys would determine exactly what had been signed, what authority he actually possessed, and whether any representations had been made without permission. Until then, the closing remained suspended and Bramwell would have to survive without quietly borrowing against family homes.

The final page was mine alone: notice that I had opened separate accounts for my income and scheduled a meeting with a divorce attorney.

Everett looked devastated.

“Twenty-seven years, Rosalind?”

I nodded toward the sticky note.

“You decided twenty-seven years was worth risking when you wrote that I couldn’t know until it was done.”

For once, the recliner was gone.

And so was the place where Everett had been hiding everything else.
