The Letter in the Freezer Revealed Why Wesley and Marisol Needed Me to Look “Unable to Care for Myself”

The first page was correspondence from an elder-law attorney. Wesley had apparently contacted the office claiming I was becoming confused, unable to manage money, and dependent on them for food and daily care. He wanted information about seeking guardianship and eventually selling my house to pay for “appropriate residential care.” The attorney had written directly to me before taking anything further. Wesley and Marisol had intercepted the letter with the missing mailbox key and hidden it behind the frozen peas.

...

Suddenly, the labeled groceries made sense. They had been photographing shelves marked with Marisol’s name while telling relatives they supplied the household. The locked refrigerator held receipts and paperwork connected to their plan. None of it proved I was incompetent, but it showed me exactly what story they were preparing to tell.

The next morning, I called my own attorney, my doctor, and my bank. I preserved the letter, changed every financial password, removed access they did not need, and documented that I was still working long hospital shifts and managing my own affairs. Because Wesley and Marisol had lived with me for ten months, I did not simply throw them outside. My attorney served the proper notice ending their stay.

Wesley stared at the paperwork and whispered, “Mom, we were trying to protect you.”

I looked at the yellow tape covering food I had bought.

“No,” I said. “You were preparing to inherit a woman who was still alive.”

Then I peeled Marisol’s name off my refrigerator.
