Ryan finally looked down and said, “No. Vanessa owns it.” Denise’s expression changed instantly. The house had been mine before Ryan and I married, purchased with money from the sale of my first condo, and the deed remained solely in my name. Officer Delgado asked whether Denise had ever lived there, received mail there, or had permission from me to establish residence. The answer to every question was no. He calmly explained that Ryan could invite his mother to visit, but that did not give her the right to move herself into property she did not own against the homeowner’s wishes. Denise had called 911 expecting the police to force me aside. Instead, she was told to take her luggage and leave.
