Jason was the one who stopped him before he reached the car. “Mom,” he said quietly, “I know this man.” Eight years earlier, the night my husband died in a highway accident, Jason had been in the passenger seat. Richard had been an off-duty paramedic driving several cars behind them. He was the first person to reach the wreck. Jason remembered him immediately because Richard had pulled him from the vehicle and stayed beside him until the ambulance arrived.
