Nathaniel stopped directly in front of me and smiled. “Adelaide, congratulations on the Rotterdam acquisition. Two billion in assets under management is quite a milestone.” The room went completely silent. My mother actually laughed at first, apparently assuming he had confused me with someone else. Nathaniel looked puzzled until I quietly explained that my family did not know much about my work. Then he introduced me the way he would have in any boardroom: founder and controlling owner of Carter Infrastructure Group, the company his firm had partnered with on projects across Europe and North America.

Bethany’s expression changed fastest. Her new company had recently submitted a proposal for a major marketing contract connected to one of our developments. I had never seen it because procurement was handled independently, and I told her immediately that her proposal would receive exactly the same review as everyone else’s. Dad kept staring at my plain coat before finally asking why I had “pretended to be poor.”

“I never did,” I said. “You decided I was unsuccessful and stopped asking questions.”

Nobody laughed after that.

I stayed for dinner, congratulated Bethany sincerely on becoming CEO, and never mentioned her salary. Her achievement was still worth celebrating.

What changed was the comparison.

For years, my family needed me to be the failure so Bethany could be the success.

That Christmas, they finally discovered there had never been only room for one successful daughter.
