“You are not in trouble, Ms. Carter,” the man said. “We represent your grandfather’s estate.”
I stared at him, certain he had the wrong house.
Then the older man from the gas station stepped out of the middle SUV. He was clean-shaven now, dressed in a dark suit, but his eyes were unmistakable.
He was not homeless.
His name was Thomas Hale, a retired investigator hired years earlier by my grandfather, a wealthy man who had spent decades trying to locate the daughter his estranged son had left behind.

Thomas explained that my father had died before he could repair the damage between them. My grandfather had recently passed away too, leaving instructions that no inheritance should be delivered until his representatives were certain they had found the right person.

But the overdue bills were paid. Eli received the stability I had always wanted for him, and I returned to the gas station carrying food, blankets, and assistance for the people who genuinely needed it.
