My daughter began sobbing before I finished repeating Eli’s words. She had been working night shifts for months and believed Kevin when he said all three boys shared the bedrooms fairly. Eli had never complained because Kevin warned him that “extra children” could be sent away if they caused problems.
My nephew told me to photograph Eli’s belongings, document every statement without questioning him further, and contact child protective services. A hospital social worker joined the call and helped my daughter make an emergency safety plan from her bed.
Then I called Kevin.
“Eli will not be returning to your house,” I said.
He laughed and told me grandparents had no authority over how a man disciplined children beneath his own roof. He stopped laughing when the social worker introduced herself on the recorded line and explained that investigators were already being sent to the property.
They found Eli’s sleeping bag behind a chair in the laundry room. The other boys had furnished bedrooms. Kevin had also locked food cabinets and forced Eli to complete chores before he was allowed to eat.
My daughter discharged herself into my care and filed for emergency custody protections. Kevin was removed from the home while the investigation continued.
Eli stayed with me until his mother found a small apartment nearby. On his first night there, she showed him his new bedroom.
He stood in the doorway clutching his dinosaur and asked, “The whole bed?”
She knelt beside him and answered, “The whole room, sweetheart. You were never extra.”
