By morning, the secrets began surfacing. Mother discovered Dad had refinanced the house twice and had been using my monthly transfers to keep the loans current. Renata learned Desmond’s company was far deeper in debt than he had admitted and that the $220,000 “bridge loan” would have covered overdue payroll and vendors, not some exciting expansion. Their problems had existed long before Christmas dinner. My money had merely hidden them.

Dad called first, demanding that I restore the mortgage payments before the next due date. Desmond followed with messages claiming employees would suffer unless I reconsidered. I refused to become responsible for decisions I had never made.
