What a Blue Vest on a Dog Really Means

A blue vest may identify a service dog, a dog in training, or simply a pet whose owner prefers blue equipment. What matters more is the wording printed on the vest. Labels such as “Service Dog,” “In Training,” “Do Not Pet,” “Nervous,” or “Needs Space” provide clearer instructions than the color itself.

At a veterinary clinic, staff may already know that a particular dog is anxious, reactive, recovering from treatment, or unable to interact safely with other animals. The receptionist’s warning may therefore have been based on that individual dog’s medical or behavioral needs rather than a general rule about blue vests.

Regardless of color, it is safest to prevent dogs from approaching unfamiliar animals in a waiting room. Veterinary visits can be stressful, and even normally friendly dogs may react differently when frightened, injured, or sick. Keeping a short leash and asking the owner before allowing contact helps protect everyone.

So the blue vest did not automatically mean something was “wrong” with the dog. It likely served as working equipment or a visible request for space. The receptionist should have explained politely, but keeping the dogs separated was still the safest decision.
