Tiny Bathroom Flies May Reveal a Hidden Problem Inside Your Drains

Seeing tiny, fuzzy flies resting near your bathroom sink or shower can be unsettling. These insects are commonly called drain flies, sewer flies, or moth flies. Although they do not usually bite or spread serious disease, their presence often signals excess moisture and organic buildup hidden inside your plumbing.

Drain flies lay their eggs in the slimy film that develops inside drains. This material can contain soap residue, hair, body oils, toothpaste, dead skin, and other debris. Even when a bathroom looks spotless, the inside of a pipe may still provide the perfect breeding environment.
...

Because their life cycle can be completed within a few weeks, killing only the adult flies rarely solves the problem. New insects will continue appearing unless the eggs, larvae, and buildup inside the drain are removed.

The most effective response is to clean the drain thoroughly. Remove visible hair and debris, scrub the pipe walls with a flexible drain brush, and flush the area with hot water. Enzymatic drain cleaners may also help break down organic matter without relying on harsh chemicals.

You should also fix dripping pipes, improve bathroom ventilation, and keep damp areas as dry as possible. Unused drains should be flushed regularly so stagnant water and debris do not accumulate.

If drain flies continue returning despite repeated cleaning, a deeper plumbing issue may be responsible. Hidden leaks, cracked pipes, or stubborn blockages may require a licensed plumber.

These tiny insects are usually more annoying than dangerous, but they should not be ignored. They may be your home’s first visible warning that moisture and buildup are developing out of sight.
