If your mom recently moved to Pennsylvania and started noticing chairs sitting along neighborhood roads, she’s definitely not the first person to wonder what they’re for. At first glance, they can look like abandoned furniture or even part of a neighborhood prank. In reality, there’s often a simple explanation rooted in local tradition.
In many Pennsylvania communities—especially in cities and towns that receive heavy snowfall—people place chairs, cones, or other household items in parking spaces they have spent time digging out after a snowstorm. The idea is that after shoveling a large amount of snow to clear a parking spot, they want to reserve it for themselves when they return home. While this custom is common in some neighborhoods, it isn’t always recognized or enforced by local laws.
Outside of winter, chairs may occasionally be used for other temporary purposes, such as saving space for a moving truck, marking an area for maintenance, or signaling that work is being done nearby. However, these uses are much less common than the snow-related tradition.
Whether or not it’s allowed depends on the city or township. Some municipalities tolerate the practice during severe snowstorms, while others prohibit reserving public parking spaces altogether.
So if you spot chairs lined up along Pennsylvania streets, they’re usually not random. They’re often a reflection of a long-standing local custom that has been passed down through generations, even if it seems unusual to newcomers.
