With my wedding just around the corner, I thought choosing flowers would be one of the easiest parts of planning. Instead, it’s turned into one of my biggest sources of stress. Everyone keeps asking about the bouquet toss and insisting it’s a “must-have” tradition. The problem is, I actually want to keep my bouquet as a keepsake, and I’ve never really understood why brides are expected to throw it into a crowd in the first place.
The bouquet toss is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. In medieval Europe, wedding guests believed that owning a piece of the bride’s clothing or flowers would bring good luck. To avoid having guests pull at their dress, brides began tossing their bouquet into the crowd as a symbolic gesture instead. Over time, the custom evolved into the familiar tradition where unmarried guests gather to catch the bouquet, with the belief that the person who catches it will be the next to get married.
Today, however, many couples are choosing to skip the bouquet toss altogether. Some brides prefer to preserve their bouquet as a meaningful reminder of their wedding day, while others simply don’t enjoy being the center of attention during that part of the reception. Many also feel the tradition doesn’t fit every guest list, especially if there are only a few unmarried friends attending or if some guests might feel uncomfortable participating.
There are plenty of alternatives, too. Some couples toss a smaller, inexpensive bouquet made just for the tradition, while others replace the bouquet toss with an anniversary dance, a group photo, or another activity that includes more of their guests.
The most important thing to remember is that your wedding should reflect what makes you happy—not what everyone else expects. Traditions can be fun, but they’re entirely optional. If keeping your bouquet is what feels right, that’s reason enough to do exactly that.
