Harper stood frozen with the cold key in her hand as Dorothy quietly walked away. Curiosity soon overcame anger, and together with Frank and Claire, she unlocked the long-sealed room their father had forbidden anyone to enter since their mother’s death.
The room looked untouched by time. Boxes lined the walls, carefully labeled in Edward’s handwriting. Inside were journals, medical records, photographs, and dozens of unopened letters addressed to each of his children. At the center of the desk rested a single envelope marked, “Read this together.”
Edward’s letter explained that Constance had struggled for years with a painful secret that had strained their marriage long before her illness. Rather than allow his children to remember their mother through mistakes she deeply regretted, he chose to preserve her dignity and keep the truth hidden. Dorothy had learned the full story only after Edward trusted her with the journals during his final illness, promising she would reveal them only after his death.
As Harper turned each page, the image she had carried of her parents began to change.
