It was a busy evening at the restaurant when a woman walked through the front door looking around the dining room. She told me she was meeting a group of friends who had arrived before her. As I usually do with every guest, I greeted her with a smile, handed her a menu, and said, “Take a look while I find your table. They’ve got to be here somewhere.”
Instead of glancing through the menu, she stared at it with a look of genuine fear and confusion. Her hands began to shake slightly as she looked from the menu back to me. Thinking something might be wrong with the prices or that perhaps she had received the wrong menu, I asked if everything was okay.
She quietly explained that she had a severe food allergy and always became nervous when eating somewhere new. She wasn’t looking at the menu to decide what sounded good—she was desperately searching for ingredients that could trigger a dangerous allergic reaction. Her friends had chosen the restaurant without realizing how limited her options might be, and she was worried about ordering the wrong thing.
I immediately reassured her that we took food allergies seriously. I brought over the manager, who reviewed the menu with her, explained how each dish was prepared, and pointed out which meals could be safely modified. The kitchen even prepared her food separately to reduce the risk of cross-contact.
By the time her friends arrived at the table, the fear on her face had been replaced with relief. She thanked us for taking the extra time to answer her questions and said it was the first time in a long while that she had felt comfortable eating at a new restaurant.
That experience reminded me that what looks like an overreaction often has a perfectly understandable reason. A little patience and understanding can turn an anxious moment into one that someone remembers for all the right reasons.
