The auditor had exploited her role to approve Claire’s co-signer status early, then used that access window to inject a delayed transaction that would appear legitimate once system syncing occurred overnight. By the time the bank’s automated alerts flagged the inconsistency, the false approval had already been embedded in the ledger.
What she didn’t anticipate was Steven’s routine dual-verification check for any account tied to a nonprofit over a certain threshold. That safeguard forced a manual review of the transaction timestamps, exposing the mismatch between the two approval layers.
The bank reversed the unauthorized entry, locked the account, and launched a full internal investigation. Within days, the auditor was removed from her position and charged with financial fraud and unauthorized system manipulation.
A week later, Claire and I sat in Steven’s office as he handed her a clean authorization packet.
“This is what your mother built,” he said gently.
