Experts Warn There’s One Kitchen Appliance You Should Always Unplug at Night

Many people go through their nightly routine without thinking twice about their kitchen appliances. Lights are switched off, doors are locked, and everything seems perfectly safe. However, safety experts often warn that one common habit could increase the risk of electrical issues while you sleep: leaving certain kitchen appliances plugged in overnight.

...

The appliance most frequently mentioned is the toaster, especially older models or ones that are used regularly. While it may seem harmless, a toaster contains internal heating elements and mechanical parts that can sometimes pose a risk if there is a fault, buildup of crumbs, or an electrical surge. In rare cases, these conditions can lead to overheating, which is why some fire safety guidelines recommend unplugging it when it is not in use.

Other appliances that experts sometimes suggest unplugging include air fryers, coffee makers, and electric kettles, particularly if they don’t have automatic shut-off features or if they are older models. Even when turned off, some devices may still draw small amounts of electricity or remain in a standby state, which can slightly increase risk over time.

That said, it’s important to keep things in perspective. Modern kitchen appliances are generally designed with multiple safety features, and actual incidents are rare. Fire risk is typically low when appliances are in good condition, used properly, and kept clean from grease or crumbs.

Still, many people choose to unplug certain appliances before bed as a simple precaution. It takes only a few seconds and can provide extra peace of mind, especially in households where appliances are used heavily throughout the day.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to balancing convenience with caution. While you don’t need to unplug your entire kitchen every night, being mindful of which appliances are left connected can be a small but smart habit that adds an extra layer of home safety.
