My Dishwasher Shattered Without Warning—Then I Learned What Never Belongs Inside

After inspecting the dishwasher, the technician asked a simple question: “What did you put in here?” I told him I’d loaded it the same way I always did. He explained that while dishwashers are incredibly convenient, not every kitchen item is designed to withstand the intense heat, water pressure, and detergent used during a wash cycle. Some materials can crack, warp, or even shatter, potentially damaging both the dishwasher and everything else inside.

He shared a list of items that are generally best washed by hand. These included delicate crystal glassware, which can easily crack or become cloudy, cast-iron cookware that can lose its seasoning and rust, sharp kitchen knives that may become dull, wooden cutting boards and utensils that can warp or split, insulated travel mugs that often trap water, fine china with metallic decorations, nonstick pans that aren’t labeled dishwasher-safe, and aluminum cookware that may discolor over time.

He also mentioned that plastic containers should only go in the dishwasher if they’re specifically marked as dishwasher-safe, since some plastics can melt or deform on the lower rack where temperatures are highest.

The experience taught me that using a dishwasher isn’t just about fitting everything inside and pressing “Start.” Taking a few moments to check whether an item is dishwasher-safe can help prevent costly damage and keep your kitchen equipment in good condition. Sometimes the quickest way to clean up can end up creating a much bigger mess if the wrong items are loaded inside.
