The Toolbox From My Father’s Cabin Contained Something My Cousin Wanted Before We Found It
Harold called the sheriff before either of us touched the abandoned toolbox. Inside were old fishing lures, rusted hand tools, and a false wooden bottom that slid open with the press of a hidden latch. The compartment was empty except for a folded note that read, “I’m sorry I couldn’t wait any longer.”
By that afternoon, Eric had already contacted me.
He admitted taking the envelope but insisted he hadn’t stolen anything that belonged to our family. Twenty years earlier, he and my father had secretly invested in a small parcel of hunting land with plans to surprise the rest of the family after it was fully paid off. When my father became ill, the paperwork was hidden inside the toolbox for safekeeping, and only the two of them knew where it was.
After Dad passed away, Eric couldn’t bring himself to return to the cabin. When he learned the property had finally been transferred to my brother, he feared the toolbox might be thrown away during the cleanup. Rather than explain the entire story beforehand, he quietly retrieved the envelope himself.
The documents inside proved everything. The hunting land had already been paid in full years earlier, and my father’s handwritten note made his wishes perfectly clear: ownership was to be divided equally between Eric and my brother.
A week later, the three of us met at the county office to record the transfer exactly as Dad had intended.
As we walked out, my brother smiled.
“I thought the cabin was the last thing Dad left us.”
I looked toward the tree line surrounding the lake.
“Turns out he was still keeping one final promise… hidden in an old toolbox.”
