Waiting at the grocery store checkout after a long day, I was eager to get home as quickly as possible. Just before I reached the cashier, a woman behind me asked if she could go ahead because she only had a birthday cake. Under normal circumstances I probably would have let her, but I was running late myself, and her impatient attitude made me decide to keep my place in line. She seemed annoyed, but neither of us said much as I finished paying for my groceries.
