I Used Brand-New Sheets Immediately—Then My Mother-in-Law Stopped Me Cold

My mother-in-law recently surprised us with a beautiful new set of bed sheets. They were soft, neatly folded, and looked ready to go straight onto the bed.

Excited to freshen up the bedroom, I opened the package and immediately started putting them on the mattress.

That’s when she stopped me.

“You need to wash them first,” she said firmly.

I looked at her in confusion.
...

“They’re brand new,” I replied. “Why would they need washing if they’ve never been used?”

She smiled and explained that new bedding often goes through several stages of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping before it reaches your home. Along the way, the fabric may come into contact with dust, dyes, finishing chemicals, or handling by multiple people.

I had honestly never thought about that before.

After doing a little research, I discovered that many manufacturers and cleaning experts recommend washing new sheets before sleeping on them. A first wash can remove excess dyes and finishing treatments that help fabrics stay wrinkle-free or look crisp on store shelves. It also helps eliminate any dust or residue that may have collected during production and transport.

Another bonus is that freshly washed sheets often become softer after their first trip through the laundry, making them even more comfortable to sleep on.

Of course, not everyone follows this advice. Some people use new sheets straight out of the package without ever noticing a problem, while others prefer to wash every new fabric item—from towels to clothing—before using it for the first time.

In our house, we decided it wasn’t worth taking chances.

The sheets went into the washing machine with a mild detergent, and that evening we made the bed with bedding that smelled fresh and felt even softer than before.

What started as a simple disagreement turned into a useful lesson. Sometimes taking one extra step before using something new can improve both comfort and peace of mind—and now, washing new sheets first has become a habit in our home.
