Theo walked straight to Landon’s table carrying the updated event agreement. He leaned down, spoke quietly, and placed the full-price invoice beside my son’s plate. The family discount was gone. So were the complimentary upgrades they had always received because I had known Theo for years and quietly covered the difference. Landon stared at the total, then looked toward the foyer where I was still drinking water alone.
Brielle followed him out seconds later. “What did you do?” she whispered. I told her I had simply stopped subsidizing an event where I was considered important enough to help pay, but not important enough to eat. Then Landon’s phone buzzed. The next $650 transfer had failed to arrive. He looked at me differently after that—not angry at first, just shocked that something he treated as permanent had actually been optional.
