President Donald Trump is continuing his effort to revive a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and numerous other defendants over claims connected to the 2016 election and allegations of Trump-Russia collusion, with his next potential stop being the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court docket shows that Justice Clarence Thomas granted Trump a second extension to file a petition for review. The current deadline is October 9, 2026, not September 9. Thomas initially extended the deadline to September 9 and then granted another request on August 27 pushing it back one additional month. The extensions are routine procedural actions and do not indicate whether the Court is interested in hearing the case. Supreme Court

Trump originally sued Clinton, the Democratic National Committee and numerous other defendants in 2022, alleging they participated in a conspiracy surrounding claims that his 2016 campaign had improper connections to Russia.

A federal district court dismissed the case and imposed sanctions. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit largely upheld those rulings in November 2025, affirming approximately $937,989 in fees and costs imposed jointly on Trump and his attorneys. The appeals court concluded that most of Trump’s claims were untimely or legally insufficient, although it ordered a limited technical change concerning one defendant because of a jurisdictional issue. Trump’s attorneys argue that the lower courts wrongly dismissed his claims and improperly imposed sanctions. The Supreme Court has not agreed to hear the dispute. As of October 8, its official docket shows only the extension request, meaning Trump still must file a petition and then persuade at least four justices to grant review before the merits could ever reach the Court.
