The Deed Proved Exactly Who Owned the Ranch
The sheriff did not arrest anyone that morning. He did something more useful. He separated my father from the realtor, photographed the damaged gate hardware, collected the camera footage, and asked everyone for identification. My father kept insisting there had been a “family agreement.” I walked outside carrying the deed, closing documents, and the written notice my attorney had already sent him weeks earlier stating plainly that he had no ownership interest.
Then the realtor spoke. Dad had told her the ranch belonged to the family and that I had agreed to sell my portion so my brother could use the proceeds for a business property. She had never seen my signature. The moment she realized there was no authorization, she closed her folder and told Dad she wanted nothing further to do with the listing.
