The Man Waiting Wasn’t There for Desmond

Desmond’s security team met us before we entered the terminal. The person asking about me was not a reporter. It was a private investigator hired by Garrett. Somehow, my ex-husband had discovered which flight I was taking and wanted confirmation that Wren and I had arrived in Chicago. Desmond immediately offered protection, but I refused anything dramatic. I simply wanted to understand why Garrett was suddenly so interested in finding us.

The answer came from my divorce attorney an hour later. Garrett had filed paperwork claiming I had taken Wren without informing him, even though my attorney had emailed him our Chicago address three days earlier. More importantly, Garrett was trying to challenge our temporary custody arrangement while still controlling money from our frozen joint account. The investigator had apparently been hired to gather photographs that could make it appear as though I was hiding with another man.
...

That explained the phones on the airplane. Someone had recognized Desmond, and pictures of me asleep against his shoulder were already circulating online. What looked like an innocent moment could easily be twisted. Desmond’s attorneys preserved the flight records and security communications, while my lawyer documented Garrett’s prior notice of our move. For once, I didn’t panic. I had evidence before Garrett had a chance to rewrite the story.

Desmond and I exchanged numbers before leaving the airport, but nothing romantic happened that day. He simply made sure Wren and I reached my cousin’s apartment safely. Months later, after the custody dispute settled and my life became quiet again, I received a message from him asking whether I still owed him an apology for sleeping on his shoulder. I laughed for the first time in months. That flight hadn’t rescued me from my problems. It had reminded me that strangers could show more kindness in three hours than some people offered in years.
