The Forged Papers Explained Why They Wanted Me Gone

Attorney Delgado explained that the photographs came from an investigator hired after a title company contacted him about suspicious paperwork. Marguerite had been trying to establish that Emmett had ownership rights in the house so she could push through financing for renovations and other debts. One document carried what appeared to be Emmett’s signature. The problem was simple: Emmett had been hundreds of miles away on a business trip when it was signed.

Emmett stared at Marguerite as though he were seeing her for the first time. Coralie finally admitted her mother had been pressuring them for months to “secure” the house before I changed my mind. That was why Marguerite wanted me kept away from gatherings, why she had started referring to the property as theirs, and why my presence at the birthday party suddenly mattered so much. She needed everyone behaving as though I had already surrendered control.
...

The attempted filing had never changed the title, and my attorneys had already placed formal notices with the appropriate parties while the questionable documents were reviewed. I did not threaten anyone or make dramatic promises about prison. I simply told Marguerite she was no longer welcome in my home and that anything involving forged paperwork would be handled by professionals.

Thirty days later, Emmett and Coralie moved into a rental nearby. Marguerite went somewhere else. I did not cut my grandson out of my life, and I never blamed him for what the adults had done. Emmett eventually apologized without excuses and began rebuilding our relationship slowly. As for the Princeton house, I kept it. Not because ten million dollars made me powerful, but because that birthday taught me something money had hidden for too long: generosity without boundaries eventually becomes permission in the minds of people willing to take too much.
