The Bride’s Name Explained Every Tuesday Night

The name on the bride’s line was Carolyn Pruitt. I stared at it until the letters blurred. Loretta quietly asked whether Dalton and I had ever divorced. We had not. She told me not to make assumptions about what the record legally meant until I spoke with an attorney, but she printed certified copies of both licenses for me. I folded them carefully and left without calling Dalton.

That afternoon, I drove to Louisville. I found Carolyn’s address through an old mutual friend and sat outside for twenty minutes before knocking. She opened the door wearing the same scarf I remembered from Kroger. When I showed her the license, she started crying. Carolyn believed Dalton had divorced me years earlier. Four years ago, while she was undergoing cancer treatment, he had reappeared, apologized for leaving her, and told her our marriage had ended.
...

The Tuesday “side jobs” had been visits to Carolyn. The hospital parking stub had been hers. Dalton had built two completely different lives and kept each woman believing the other belonged to his past. Carolyn showed me messages, insurance paperwork, and photographs stretching back years. Neither of us shouted. There was something strangely peaceful about realizing the other woman had been lied to too.

I went home before Dalton returned and placed both certified marriage records on the kitchen table. Then I called an attorney before saying anything else. Whatever Dalton had done legally would be sorted out through proper channels; I wasn’t going to guess. When he walked in and saw the papers, he stopped so suddenly the door remained open behind him. I finally understood why he had held me too long every Tuesday night. It wasn’t love making him cling tighter. It was guilt. Twenty-two years earlier, I had believed I had “stolen” Dalton from Carolyn. Standing there that night, I realized neither of us had ever truly had him. We had both simply believed the version of his life he chose to show us.
